Reaching Out to Students

1) PRESIDENTIAL FIRST-YEAR GROUP
Moving to university is a scary and exciting event. The campus is flood with new minds, with different experiences and imaginations. Unfortunately, few of these students…

become involved in leadership positions and nourished to transform their new ideas into realities. Most of those elected are of a particular type, claiming popular appeal within the first week. Many more remain the un-elected interested students and it is to these students that I would like to reach out as president to individually pull them into a group to nourish their involvement and passions. Admittance would be based on recommendation or application, rather than election. The result would be 30-50 first years having direct contact with the president of the student council and the president with have direct contact with first years throughout the residence system to raise awareness about the University Student Council.

2) BRINGING WESTERN ONLINE
Plainly speaking, the USC website is a “student government” website, we need a “student” website. As one student remarked, “it must be the ultimate source of procrastination for all students” while only focussing on the student government with the About US button. Here are some ideas of things that could be included:
a. Information on Upcoming Events
b. Recognition of Past Events and Achievements
c. Live Bus Schedule for Various locations On-Campus
d. Weather/ International News
e. Blogs – entertainment, politics, student life, etc.
f. Faculty and Club Publication
g. Recognizing Excellence – student, staff, faculty, clubs, community
h. Template for Faculty Councils
i. Visible in Lobbies and Student Lounge
j. Used Book store and USC merchandise ordering from online
k. Interesting informative website links (Mind your Mind)
l. Pen Pal System - Global Understanding
m. Corresponding Blackberry and iPhone apps
